  • Two members elected foreign members of Chinese Academy of Engineering

On Thursday 18th November, the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), China’s national academy for engineering, announced 84 new members and 20 new foreign members. The newly elected foreign members include the following two members of ABCP:

    • Professor Zhanfeng Cui FREng FAIMBE FIChemE, Donald Pollock Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Oxford; Chair of ABCP Council
    • Professor Hua Zhao FREng FIMechE FSAE, Vice Provost & Dean of College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, Brunel University London; President of ABCP
  • Professor Jian Dai was elected to fellowship in Royal Academy of Engineering

The Royal Academy of Engineering has elected new leading figures in the field of engineering and technology to its Fellowship, under Fit for the Future diversity initiative. ABCP member, Professor Jian Dai of King’s College London, is on the list of new fellows, as he “has made a pioneering contribution to mechanical engineering, most notably by his contributions to the fundamental theory, design and applications of mechanisms and robotic systems. He is particularly noted for having introduced the concept of metamorphic and reconfigurable mechanisms that can be folded and re-erected in an origami-style approach to form mobile or multi-functional devices. Many of these mechanisms have been taken forward to commercialisation by university spin-outs and major industries. He received the DED Mechanisms and Robotics Award established in 1974 and was the 58th recipient of the most prestigious ASME Machine Design Award established in 1958”.

  • Professor Yaochu Jin awarded Humboldt Professorship for Artificial Intelligence for Bielefeld University

It was announced on 1st July 2021 that six new Humboldt Professorships had been selected. Three of the six new Humboldt Professors are awarded for their excellent research in AI, and Professor Yaochu Jin, a Full Member of the Association, is one of them. He is a Distinguished Chair, Head of the NICE (Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering) Research Group and Director of Research of the Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey. He will move to the Bielefeld University in Germany in October 2021 to take his new Humboldt Professorship. Yaochu is one of the leading pioneers of swarm robotics and the larger field of computational intelligence. At Bielefeld, his expertise will be utilised to span the interdisciplinary bridge between AI research in the Technical Faculty and applications in bioinformatics/biotechnology in the newly established Medical Faculty.
