Choosing the Right Research Methods: A Practical Guide to Research Design for PhD Students and Early-Career Researchers

Speaker
Dr Peikai Li is a lecturer at the Leeds University Business School. He earned his PhD in Work and Organizational Psychology from Utrecht University and worked as a postdoc at Ghent University. His research primarily focuses on work stress, leadership, and meta-analysis. His work has been published in journals such as Leadership Quarterly, Human Resource Management, Human Relations, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.

Abstract
Choosing an appropriate research method is one of the most important decisions in social science research. This talk offers a practical introduction to how PhD students and early-career researchers can move from a research question to a suitable research design. Rather than focusing on technical details, the talk will discuss how different types of questions require different kinds of evidence, data, and analysis. Drawing on examples from organizational behavior, management psychology, and related fields, it will briefly compare common approaches such as cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal studies, experience sampling methods, experiments, interviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis. The talk will also reflect on common challenges in methodological learning, including how to avoid choosing methods simply because they appear advanced or fashionable. It will also consider how statistical software, coding, and AI tools can support research design and data analysis. The aim is to help doctoral students and early-career researchers think more clearly and strategically about matching research questions with appropriate methods.
PhD students who are developing research topics and conducting research, as well as early-career researchers and other social science researchers interested in strengthening the quality of their research designs, are warmly invited to attend and engage in discussion and knowledge exchange.
