The recent ban of ChatGPT in Italy for data protection concerns and the ongoing call from the Future of Life Institute on “Pause Giant AI Experiments” have let all researchers and the whole society think about the good\, the bad and the hopeful of advanced AI techniques especially generative ones such as LLMs (large language models)\, into which ChatGPT and its underlying technique GPT fall. \nThis special ABCP panel discussion is co-organised by the ABCP AIG on AI and AIG on Cyber Security to provide a platform for the panellists and the participants to have a timely discussion and debate about pros and cons of ChatGPT and other powerful but “problematic” AI techniques\, and also the future directions researchers in all disciplines can think about. \nThis panel discussion is a member-only event\, and the information on how to participate will be circulated via the ABCP mailing list for all members. ABCP members are also encouraged to share the event with their PhD students and colleagues who can understand Chinese to join.

SUMMARY:Impact Case Webinar: Improved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications
DESCRIPTION:Title\nImproved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications: Sharing experience from constructing a REF2021 impact case study \nSpeaker\nDr Yinghui Wei (韦颖慧博士)\, Associate Professor of Statistics\, Centre for Mathematical Sciences\, School of Engineering\, Computing and Mathematics\, University of Plymouth \nChair\nDr Chen Qin (秦宸博士)\, Lecturer in Computer Vision and Machine Learning\, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Imperial-X\, Imperial College London; Co-Chair of ABCP AIG (Academic Interest Group) on Medicine and Health \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nImpact case studies are a critical part of the UK national research excellence framework. Case studies attempt to give an overview of the impact of academic research\, by showing in a 5-page narrative\, to triangulate the link between research outputs\, activities\, and their positive impacts beyond academia. The time between research being conducted and impact being created can vary by discipline and project. In the case when pathways from research to impact is not linear\, a typical issue in fundamental disciplines\, triangulating the relationship between the underpinning research and impact claimed is challenging. This requires careful planning and clear articulation\, to illustrate the research and significance of the impact with relevant supporting evidence. In this talk\, I will share my experience in constructing an impact case study for UoA10 Mathematical Sciences. I will describe our novel research in medical statistics and their impact with national and international reach in health and care. The impact case study was drawn upon the following examples: a meta-analysis within the Cochrane review on the effect of cutting portion size on consumption of food; a Stata command to regenerate individual level time-to-event data from published survival curves; and the use of the difference in restricted mean survival time as an alternative to hazard ratios when analysing time-to-event outcomes. \nBio of Speaker\nDr Yinghui Wei is Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Plymouth. Her research interests centre on the development of statistical methodology and the applications to medicine\, clinical trials\, epidemiological studies and evidence synthesis in health. She led an impact case study “Improved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications” for REF2021 UoA10 Mathematical Sciences at University of Plymouth. She recently held an MRC fellowship grant “Using data to improve public health: COVID-19 secondment” to work within the COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing National Core Study to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on population health. \nHow to Participate\nJoin the Zoom meeting using the following information: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82744983887?pwd=azhvem52ZkhEZFpIZUNReHdIZ2I1UT09 \nMeeting ID: 827 4498 3887\nPasscode: 769595 \nOne tap mobile\n+442034815237\,\,82744983887#\,\,\,\,*769595# United Kingdom\n+442034815240\,\,82744983887#\,\,\,\,*769595# United Kingdom \nDial by your location\n+44 203 481 5237 United Kingdom\n+44 203 481 5240 United Kingdom\n+44 203 901 7895 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6591 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6592 United Kingdom\n+44 330 088 5830 United Kingdom\n+44 131 460 1196 United Kingdom \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcWO2CFkF7
