SUMMARY:Smart Retail Service Design for Healthy Ageing
DESCRIPTION:Title\nSmart Retail Service Design for Healthy Ageing \nSpecial Note\nThis is the third of a new series of professorial inaugural talks series of the ABCP\, for celebrating promotions of its Associate Members to a professorial post and ABCP Full Membership and sharing experience with non-professorial academics on how to get promoted towards a professorial post. \nSpeaker\nProfessor Yuanyuan Yin (殷媛媛教授)\, Professor of Design\, Winchester School of Art\, University of Southampton\, UK \nChair\nDr Wen Wang (汪文博士)\, Co-Chair of Youth Committee\, ABCP & Associate Professor in HRM Data Analytics and Interpretation\, University of Leicester \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nGrocery shopping plays a vital role in the health and social well-being of older individuals. Statistics show that approximately 19% of people aged 80-84 and a staggering 60% of those over 90 face difficulties when it comes to purchasing groceries (Age UK\, 2021). These challenges range from accessibility issues within stores to making healthy food choices\, reflecting a broader issue of catering to the needs of aging consumers in the retail sector. \nDespite the growing trend of omnichannel retailing\, which aims to provide a seamless shopping experience across various platforms including in-store and online\, there remains a significant gap in catering to the needs of older adults. This gap is evident in the relatively low adoption rates of online grocery shopping among individuals aged 65 and above\, comprising only 5% of the overall online customer base. Furthermore\, a substantial portion of older adults in the UK\, approximately 4.2 million\, have never utilized the internet\, highlighting the digital divide that exists within this demographic. \nTo address these challenges and improve the grocery shopping experience for older consumers\, this project aimed to explore and develop an ageing-friendly smart grocery retail service to improve ageing customers’ grocery shopping experience and encourage healthy shopping and eating behaviour. This prototype features a smart trolley equipped with a built-in system designed to assist older customers during their in-store shopping experience. Key functionalities of the smart trolley include the automatic creation of shopping lists based on the customer’s historical transaction data\, in-store navigation assistance\, self-checkout capabilities\, and personalized shopping suggestions tailored to the customer’s preferences\, budget\, allergies\, and nutritional needs. This future research will focus on a virtual reality based smart shopping service design for older customers. \nThe speaker will also share her career and research development stories. \nBio of Speaker\nYuanyuan Yin is a Professor of Design\, Head of Research at the Design Department\, and Director of the Global Smart Lab at the Winchester School of Art\, University of Southampton. Yuanyuan completed her PhD in Design Research and MA in Design Strategy & Innovation from Brunel University\, UK. She earlier obtained her B. Eng. degree in Industrial Design in China. She joined the University of Southampton in 2009. Her research has concentrated on inclusive design for older people through ethnographic user studies\, co-design collaborations\, and improving innovation in product and service design. She has received more than 1.5M in grants income from ESRC\, British Council\, and Confucius Institute Headquarters. Her recent research focused on design for inclusive ageing\, inclusive smart retail service design\, pension service design\, and smart textile design for healthy ageing.
