SUMMARY:Smart Retail Service Design for Healthy Ageing
DESCRIPTION:Title\nSmart Retail Service Design for Healthy Ageing \nSpecial Note\nThis is the third of a new series of professorial inaugural talks series of the ABCP\, for celebrating promotions of its Associate Members to a professorial post and ABCP Full Membership and sharing experience with non-professorial academics on how to get promoted towards a professorial post. \nSpeaker\nProfessor Yuanyuan Yin (殷媛媛教授)\, Professor of Design\, Winchester School of Art\, University of Southampton\, UK \nChair\nDr Wen Wang (汪文博士)\, Co-Chair of Youth Committee\, ABCP & Associate Professor in HRM Data Analytics and Interpretation\, University of Leicester \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nGrocery shopping plays a vital role in the health and social well-being of older individuals. Statistics show that approximately 19% of people aged 80-84 and a staggering 60% of those over 90 face difficulties when it comes to purchasing groceries (Age UK\, 2021). These challenges range from accessibility issues within stores to making healthy food choices\, reflecting a broader issue of catering to the needs of aging consumers in the retail sector. \nDespite the growing trend of omnichannel retailing\, which aims to provide a seamless shopping experience across various platforms including in-store and online\, there remains a significant gap in catering to the needs of older adults. This gap is evident in the relatively low adoption rates of online grocery shopping among individuals aged 65 and above\, comprising only 5% of the overall online customer base. Furthermore\, a substantial portion of older adults in the UK\, approximately 4.2 million\, have never utilized the internet\, highlighting the digital divide that exists within this demographic. \nTo address these challenges and improve the grocery shopping experience for older consumers\, this project aimed to explore and develop an ageing-friendly smart grocery retail service to improve ageing customers’ grocery shopping experience and encourage healthy shopping and eating behaviour. This prototype features a smart trolley equipped with a built-in system designed to assist older customers during their in-store shopping experience. Key functionalities of the smart trolley include the automatic creation of shopping lists based on the customer’s historical transaction data\, in-store navigation assistance\, self-checkout capabilities\, and personalized shopping suggestions tailored to the customer’s preferences\, budget\, allergies\, and nutritional needs. This future research will focus on a virtual reality based smart shopping service design for older customers. \nThe speaker will also share her career and research development stories. \nBio of Speaker\nYuanyuan Yin is a Professor of Design\, Head of Research at the Design Department\, and Director of the Global Smart Lab at the Winchester School of Art\, University of Southampton. Yuanyuan completed her PhD in Design Research and MA in Design Strategy & Innovation from Brunel University\, UK. She earlier obtained her B. Eng. degree in Industrial Design in China. She joined the University of Southampton in 2009. Her research has concentrated on inclusive design for older people through ethnographic user studies\, co-design collaborations\, and improving innovation in product and service design. SUMMARY:ABCP Webinar: Constant juggling? An interactive and research-informed webinar on managing work-life boundaries for academics
DESCRIPTION:Title\nConstant juggling? An interactive and research-informed webinar on managing work-life boundaries for academics \nSpeaker\nDr Mengyi Xu (徐梦艺博士)\, Assistant Professor in Human Resource Management\, University of Birmingham\, UK \nChair\nProfessor Lynda Jiwen Song (宋继文教授)\, Professor in Management\, Leeds University\, UK \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nThis webinar aims to share academics’ experiences of managing their work-life boundaries from recent research and lived experience\, and collectively explore individual strategies and tactics for work-life boundary management and managerial implications of hybrid working in the Higher Education (HE) sector. COVID-19 has accelerated existing trends towards the greater digitalisation and virtualisation of how the HE institutions are operated\, and the knowledge work is done. Hybrid working\, comprising a mixture of office-based and remote working\, is now a firmly established option for many employers. While it is understood that the resulting blurring of work and home domains poses threats to staff wellbeing\, health and longer-term productivity\, the problem has consistently been framed as individual responsibility with the result that less attention has been paid to what employers can and should also do to support staff. \nWe will start by sharing some recent research and lived experiences on the work-life boundary experiences of academics during and after the pandemic. Then participants will be instructed to take an assessment designed to identify their boundary style and its pros and cons. Participants will then be allocated to a breakout room to share and use the results of this assessment to develop strategies and tactics for effective work-life boundary management. The webinar will end with a debrief from the discussions where participants will share the good practices and techniques of effective work-life boundary management\, and critically reflect upon the importance of work-life boundary control for improving productivity and well-being. \nIntended participants and admission criteria for the participants\nAll ABCP members and friends. \nIf you are interested in understanding work-life boundaries ahead of the webinar\, you can read through the following article and do the work-life boundary style assessment and have their results handy. \nKossek\, E. SUMMARY:Impact Case Webinar: Experience gained and lessons learnt from a 10-year research journey on digital inclusivity
DESCRIPTION:Title\nBuilding a REF Impact Case Study: Experience gained and lessons learnt from a 10-year research journey on digital inclusivity \nSpeaker\nDr Yan Wu (吴燕博士)\, Associate Professor in Media and Communications Studies\, College of Arts and Humanities\, Swansea University \nChair\nProfessor Lynda Jiwen Song (宋继文教授)\, Leeds University Business School\, University of Leeds; Co-Chair\, ABCP AIG (Academic Interest Group) on Social Science and Humanities \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nThe speaker will provide a first-person account of her research journey to study digital inclusivity in Wales. Wu et al’s REF2021 impact case study research focuses on the challenges posed for sensory impaired users in Wales by first\, the digital switchover of television; and secondly\, the broader digitalization of services and information. They have both brought risks of exclusion\, ‘digital gaps’ and the erosion of communicative rights. The research has had an effect on the awareness and understanding of these challenges in Wales by elected representatives\, broadcasters\, Action on Hearing Loss and the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). In this talk\, Dr Wu will share experience gained and lessons learnt from her 10-year research journey – how she started this portfolio of research projects; how she built a cross-disciplinary team; how she collaborated with external partners; what are the opportunities and challenges associated with doing an impact case study and her current and future portfolio of research projects. \nBio of Speaker\nDr Yan Wu works as an Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies\, Swansea University. Her research interests focus on the social impacts of digital media and communication in China and digital inclusivity in Wales. Her publications appear in journals such as New Media and Society; Global Media and China; International Journal of Digital Television\, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art; British Journal of Chinese Studies; etc. and as book chapters in Media and Public Sphere (Palgrave Macmillan 2007)\, Climate Change and Mass Media (Peter Lang 2008)\, Migration and the Media (Peter Lang 2012)\, Public Diplomacy and the Politics of Uncertainty (Palgrave Macmillan 2021)\, The Cultural Politics of Femvertising (Palgrave Macmillan 2022). \nHow to Participate\nJoin Zoom Meeting using the following information: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89646206839?pwd=ZmNSb05uOVIwMU5EOTBrRFlEcWVWZz09 \nMeeting ID: 896 4620 6839\nPasscode: 490277 \nOne tap mobile\n+441314601196\,\,89646206839#\,\,\,\,*490277# United Kingdom\n+442034815237\,\,89646206839#\,\,\,\,*490277# United Kingdom \nDial by your location\n+44 131 460 1196 United Kingdom\n+44 203 481 5237 United Kingdom\n+44 203 481 5240 United Kingdom\n+44 203 901 7895 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6591 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6592 United Kingdom\n+44 330 088 5830 United Kingdom \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdB0gQ6fNN \n

SUMMARY:Impact Case Webinar: Improved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications
DESCRIPTION:Title\nImproved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications: Sharing experience from constructing a REF2021 impact case study \nSpeaker\nDr Yinghui Wei (韦颖慧博士)\, Associate Professor of Statistics\, Centre for Mathematical Sciences\, School of Engineering\, Computing and Mathematics\, University of Plymouth \nChair\nDr Chen Qin (秦宸博士)\, Lecturer in Computer Vision and Machine Learning\, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Imperial-X\, Imperial College London; Co-Chair of ABCP AIG (Academic Interest Group) on Medicine and Health \nLanguage\nThe talk will be delivered in English. \nAbstract\nImpact case studies are a critical part of the UK national research excellence framework. Case studies attempt to give an overview of the impact of academic research\, by showing in a 5-page narrative\, to triangulate the link between research outputs\, activities\, and their positive impacts beyond academia. The time between research being conducted and impact being created can vary by discipline and project. In the case when pathways from research to impact is not linear\, a typical issue in fundamental disciplines\, triangulating the relationship between the underpinning research and impact claimed is challenging. This requires careful planning and clear articulation\, to illustrate the research and significance of the impact with relevant supporting evidence. In this talk\, I will share my experience in constructing an impact case study for UoA10 Mathematical Sciences. I will describe our novel research in medical statistics and their impact with national and international reach in health and care. The impact case study was drawn upon the following examples: a meta-analysis within the Cochrane review on the effect of cutting portion size on consumption of food; a Stata command to regenerate individual level time-to-event data from published survival curves; and the use of the difference in restricted mean survival time as an alternative to hazard ratios when analysing time-to-event outcomes. \nBio of Speaker\nDr Yinghui Wei is Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Plymouth. Her research interests centre on the development of statistical methodology and the applications to medicine\, clinical trials\, epidemiological studies and evidence synthesis in health. She led an impact case study “Improved health research and practice through advancing statistical methods and applications” for REF2021 UoA10 Mathematical Sciences at University of Plymouth. She recently held an MRC fellowship grant “Using data to improve public health: COVID-19 secondment” to work within the COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing National Core Study to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on population health. \nHow to Participate\nJoin the Zoom meeting using the following information: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82744983887?pwd=azhvem52ZkhEZFpIZUNReHdIZ2I1UT09 \nMeeting ID: 827 4498 3887\nPasscode: 769595 \nOne tap mobile\n+442034815237\,\,82744983887#\,\,\,\,*769595# United Kingdom\n+442034815240\,\,82744983887#\,\,\,\,*769595# United Kingdom \nDial by your location\n+44 203 481 5237 United Kingdom\n+44 203 481 5240 United Kingdom\n+44 203 901 7895 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6591 United Kingdom\n+44 208 080 6592 United Kingdom\n+44 330 088 5830 United Kingdom\n+44 131 460 1196 United Kingdom \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcWO2CFkF7
